Integrated Science (Required) 18 Weeks
1 Credit
This course is intended to introduce students to the basics of the worlds of chemistry and physics. It will greatly enhance the student's knowledge of science as well as giving them an appreciation of the individual principles of chemistry and physics. The students will use physical science as a foundation course for future required science and advanced classes.
Comp. Integrated Science (Required for Honors Diploma)
18 Weeks
1 Credit
This course is designed to be more challenging and in depth. Students will progress at a faster pace and this class will be used as a foundation for future comprehensive science classes.
Biology (Required) 18 Weeks
1 Credit
Biology is the study of life. In this course, students will study living organisms ranging from microscopic to large mammals, including humans. This course is designed to give students exposure to a wide variety of topics. The purpose of this course is to expose students to "life" that is all around them. Labs, demonstrations, professional lectures, and field trips will be utilized.
Comp. Biology (Required for Honors Diploma) 18 Weeks
1 Credit
This course covers the same topics as general biology. In comprehensive biology, the students will move at a faster pace and this course will go into much greater depth.
Comp. Biology II (Elective) 18 Weeks
1 Credit
Prerequisite: Biology I and Chemistry I (may be currently enrolled in Chemistry)
This course offers students advanced level experience in the concepts of biology and laboratory techniques used by scientists. Major areas of study will include genetics, the human body, ecology, the environment, and plants. Learning will be enhanced through lecture, laboratory experiences, debates, research, and field trips.
Anatomy and Physiology (Elective) 18 Weeks
1 Credit
Prerequisite: Biology I
This class will consist of 18 weeks of anatomy & physiology. In Anatomy, students will master structure and how these structures move. Students will also master the major systems of the body. Learning will be enhanced through lab, community visits and research, gross anatomy lab and projects. This class is for ambitious juniors and seniors that have had Biology I.
Botany (Elective) 18 Weeks
1 Credit
Prerequisite: Biology I
Botany is designed for students to gain basic knowledge of the internal and external aspects of plants. Learning will be enhanced through propagation techniques within the CHS Greenhouse and maintaining and beautification of the school grounds.
Chemistry (Required) 18 Weeks
1 Credit
Chemistry is the science dealing with the structure and composition of substances, the changes in composition, and the mechanisms by which these changes occur. This courseis organized in a logical, workable sequence. Descriptive and theoretical topics are alternated to provide classroom variety and a well-correlated laboratory program. Students will learn basic chemistry concepts that will provide a background for more advanced science courses. This chemistry course will endeavor to show students the usefulness of chemistry in the world around them.
Comp. Chemistry (Required for Honors Diploma) 18 Weeks
1 Credit
In this chemistry course, the students will cover the similar topics as in general chemistry, but in much greater depth. Students will move at an accelerated pace and strong math skills are recommended.
Chemistry II (Elective) 18 Weeks
1 Credit
Prerequisite: Chemistry I
Chemistry II offers students advanced level and enrichment experiences in concepts involving chemical changes of matter. Laboratory activities and investigations are presented in the spirit of inquiry and research. Advanced-level laboratory techniques are developed to further the student's ability to pursue a chemical science related career.
Advanced Placement Chemistry (Elective) 18 Weeks
1 Credit
Prerequisite: Chemistry II
This AP Chemistry course will endeavor to show students the usefulness of chemistry in the world around them. This course will provide students with the background in modern chemistry that they need for their specialized studies, including more advanced college science courses. A college text book and laboratory manual will be utilized to prepare students for the chemistry advanced placement test.
AP Physics (Elective) 18 Weeks
1 Credit
This course is designed for juniors and seniors who are interested in developing a genuine understanding of the physical laws fundamental to all sciences. This course uses problem solving as the primary means of studying physics. The mathematical techniques used include algebra and trigonometry.
Course objective: to provide the students with a clear and logical presentation of the basic concepts and principles of physics, and to strengthen and understanding of these concepts and principles through a variety of interesting applications to the real world. Topics covered: an overview of physics, problem solving techniques, Newton's laws of motion, concurrent and parallel forces, conservation of energy, phases of matter, heat, light, reflection, refraction, and diffraction.
Environmental Science (Elective) 18 Weeks
1 Credit
The environmental science class is designed to introduce students to basic ecology concepts and to help them appreciate and understand how the world works. Topics include the water cycle, animal interactions, biomass, pollution, and the greenhouse effect.
