Drama (Elective) 18 Weeks
1 Credit
Prerequisite: Student application and teacher recommendation
Drama is designed to introduce students to basic acting and theater arts. Students will learn the basics of acting through participation in such activities as improvisations, pantomimes, skits, movements, oral interpretation, and history of the theater. These activities will culminate in the production of a play to be performed for the school and community. This course is open to students registering for grades 10-12. It is recommended that students take speech communications before applying for this course although a prerequisite course is not required.
Driver's Education (Elective) 9 Weeks
1/2 Credit
Prerequisite: At least 16 years old; driving permit
Driver education presents the information you need to become a safe, efficient driver and brings together more advanced information available on driving maneuvers and decisions, traffic laws, and vehicle control. This information will help you to make good driving decisions. Driver education focuses on factors relating to vehicles, drivers, and the highway -- parts of the system with which you must learn to interact. One of the primary purposes of driver education in to help you become more aware of the elements around you as you drive. These elements should influence your selection of speed and position of traffic. Another, broader purpose of driver education is to help you develop the knowledge and skills to become a safe, effective use of highway transportation system. The facts you learn and the skills you develop in driver education will aid to the pleasure that comes with begin a good driver. Only the student can determine how the student is going to drive. The student will have to make that decision every time he or she gets behind the steering wheel of a motor vehicle. It is felt that this class will aid in making that a good decision. Successful completion of the class should result in a reduction of most insurance premiums.
Media (Elective) 18 Weeks
1 Credit
This class is designed to help students learn to write for the media. The writing skills emphasized (clarity, conciseness, and accuracy) are required in radio and television news, advertising, and public relations. Also, students will write, edit, and produce a closed-circuit television newscast that will be shown to the entire students body. Media journalism often functions as a business rather than a traditional class, and cooperative learning techniques are used almost entirely. Students are encouraged to reach consensus and are permitted to make important decisions. Since students are given more freedom in the classroom, they are expected to be more mature and responsible. Self-motivation to get work completed, and self-discipline to stay on-task are essential elements of the journalism student
Peer Tutoring (Elective) 18 Weeks
1 Credit
A completed application and an interview with the peer tutoring committee are required for this course.
The purpose of the Peer-Tutoring program is to enable students to reach their highest potential. Under the supervision of the principal, students are placed in classrooms at Central Primary School. They assist the classroom teacher by working with the students and preparing material for use in instruction. Under the direction of the CHS Youth Service Center Coordinator, Reading with the Redhounds, a reading improvement program, helps students at South Elementary improve their reading abilities. Under the direction of the FMD teacher at CHS, peer tutors work with students with special needs.
