Humanities A {Art Appreciation}(Required) 9 Weeks
1/2 Credit
This course is required along with Humanities B (Music Appreciation for a total of 18 weeks. This introductory course will cover the four key areas of art education:
1. Studio Art -- how art is made
2. Art Criticism -- how to interpret artistic products
3. Aesthetics -- personal responses to art
4. Art History -- how art is a universal language, how art history can be traced through man's history, and how art has shaped societies
Visual Art I (Elective) 18 Weeks
1 Credit
An introductory and exploratory studio art class that encourages exploring all areas of art for future careers or for simple enjoyment. The course covers the following areas:
1. Studio Production -- the students will have "hands on" experience to develop projects in the following processes: drawing, painting, design, printing, ceramics, and sculpture
2. Art Criticism -- students will learn how to interpret artwork
3. Aesthetics -- students will learn how to make judgments on artwork with personal responses
Visual Art II (Elective) 18 Weeks
1 Credit
Prerequisite: Visual Art I
This course is a studio art class that is a continuation of the art program. Students will cover more advanced levels of art production.
Visual Art III-IV (Elective) 18 Weeks
1 Credit Each
Prerequisite: One full credit in each class in order, and a recommendation from the art teacher.
These are more advanced studio art classes of the art program. Students will have their artwork displayed and other art activities will be encouraged. Information about careers in art will be covered as well as college requirements. Each student will be encouraged to start an art portfolio.
Independent Study Art (Elective) 18 Weeks
1 Credit
Prerequisite: One full credit in Visual Art I, II, III, IV and the art teacher's recommendation.
Students, with the help of the teacher, will plan areas in art to study in greater depth. Students at this level are considering a career in art or art related, and will be expected to keep an art portfolio for exhibitions and/or competitions. Requirements for college or art institutes will be studied for future education possibilities for the career area chosen by the student.
Humanities B {Music Appreciation} (Required) 9 Weeks
1/2 Credit
This course in required along with Humanities A (Art Appreciation) for a total of 18 weeks. This course includes basic music theory and terminology along with the history of music. Music and its effect on society will be traced from the medieval to the contemporary periods by listening to a variety of music examples from these time periods.
Band I, II, III, IV (Elective) 18 Weeks
1 Credit
Band is one of two performance-based instrumental music classes. This means that performances both in and out of the classroom are required to successfully complete the course. Band includes outside performances at civic parades, ballgames, marching band competitions, concerts, and other community events.
Instrumental Ensemble (Elective) I, II, II, IV 18 Weeks
1 Credit
Instrumental ensemble is a performance-based instrumental music class, which has a performance requirement both in and out of the classroom for successful completion. Instrumental ensemble is taught in the spring semester and includes outside performances at ballgames, concerts, solo/ensemble festival, band festival, and other community events.
