Dear Senior:

Attached is a list of scholarships for the 2009-10 school year. This information is extremely valuable, so please take the list home to share with your parents. Consider the following if you want to be scholarship competitive.

1. Assume a Personal Responsibility: Keep this list and refer to it frequently. As new scholarship opportunities come in, we will update you through the “Scholarship Report” posted on the CHS website, inside and outside the guidance office and in your A/A classroom. Be sure to check it often. Do all important hand-written documents in ink.

2. Meet Deadlines: All scholarship applications must be received by the institution by the dates indicated. Dates on the listing are based on last year, so check for specific deadlines for this year. Applying early is better than applying at the last minute. All colleges require that you are accepted for admission before they will consider your scholarship application.

3. Complete and Submit the FAFSA: FAFSA is the national financial aid form for higher education. Many colleges require the FAFSA for admissions and scholarship awards whether the student needs financial assistance or not. The form will be available in the guidance office in December and may be submitted as early as January 1, 2010. The earlier you submit it, the better.

4. Recommendations: Since many scholarship applicants are strong students who have a good GPA and ACT score, an excellent recommendation can make a difference. Make sure you ask a person who knows you well and thinks highly of you to write your recommendation. When asking someone to write a recommendation, give him/her a copy of your “Recommendation Letter Information” sheet. Most importantly, give them enough time to do a good job. No one likes to be asked to write a recommendation “due tomorrow,” or worse, “this afternoon.”

5. ACT: As a senior interested in college and scholarships, if you have not taken the ACT, or if you want to try to raise your score, plan to take the ACT in October and/or December (registration deadline for the Dec. test is Nov. 6). Most scholarship applications will be due before February 1, and an ACT score is required for in-state schools. The SAT is required for some out-of-state schools. To prevent taking unneeded tests, contact the college if you are not sure if you need the SAT. Registration packets for ACT and SAT are in the guidance office. You can register online for the ACT at www.act.org. Your school code number is 180-503. Preparation materials are available in bookstores and in the CHS media center.

6. Essays: If a college requires an essay, write and rewrite until you feel that it is your best work. Asking an adult to read and offer a critique is a good idea.

The scholarship application process is very important. It can be worth thousands of dollars to you. Beware of “scholarship search” services that charge to find scholarships for you; these are generally scams. We have a scholarship book and computer program in the CHS media center that you may access for free.

As your counselors, we want you to receive as much scholarship money as possible, so we are here to serve you. Please take the initiative to contact us. Good luck!

Your Counselors,

Karen Collins (A-K) Toni Carloftis (L-Z)
