The fall year of 2005, the Corbin High School Art Department created an
experimental pilot class for A.P. Art History. This class required each
student to have completed a course of Humanities, be a senior level
student with at least an A/B grade point average, and take the required
A.P. Art History test in May. Because of difficulty in scheduling another
credit subject in the Art Department, this class was structured to be
supervised by the art teacher but be basically independent. It was scheduled to run simultaneously with other art classes. Seven students enrolled
knowing the amount of work and self discipline needed. They met twice
in the summer to receive textbooks and instructions and to start planning
how the class would be organized. Each student took on responsibility for
several chapters from their text. Because of the amount of computer software
available, the Corbin Board of Education provided each student with a new
HP Tablet to use for this class. Before each chapter, the students meet and
plan with the art teacher the material that needs to be covered. The students
are evaluated not only on the subject but on their leadership. Because of the
amount of material to be covered, the class is divided into A.P. Art History I
and II. The A.P. Art History exam is scheduled for May 11, 2006.
